Moving to Indore: A Complete City and Relocation Guide

Planning a move to Indore? You're heading to the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, a city that mixes business energy with a relaxed, food-loving character and has been ranked India's cleanest city for several years running. Whether you're relocating for work, studies or family, knowing the city beforehand makes the transition smoother.

Indore sits on the Malwa plateau in western Madhya Pradesh, about 190 km from the state capital Bhopal and around 55 km from the temple town of Ujjain. IT parks, industrial belts such as Pithampur, leading educational institutions and a lower cost of living than the big metros bring thousands of families and professionals here every year.

Places to Visit and See

Indore has plenty to fill your weekends, from royal palaces and temples to some of the best street food in the country.

A few highlights worth exploring:

  • Rajwada, the seven-storey Holkar palace in the heart of the old city
  • Lal Bagh Palace, a grand mansion of the Holkar rulers on the banks of the Khan river
  • Sarafa Bazaar, a jewellery market by day that turns into a street-food hub after dark
  • 56 Dukan, a popular lane of food stalls and cafés
  • Kanch Mandir, a Jain temple decorated entirely with glass and mirror work
  • Khajrana Ganesh Temple, one of the most visited temples in the city
  • Patalpani Waterfall, a favourite monsoon getaway just outside the city

Ujjain with its Mahakaleshwar temple, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar and the historic fort town of Mandu are all within a few hours’ drive, which makes Indore a convenient base for weekend trips.

History of the City

Indore takes its name from the Indreshwar temple on the banks of the Kan’h (Khan) river, and the settlement was once known as Indrapura.

In the early 18th century the region came under the Marathas, and Malhar Rao Holkar, the founder of the Holkar dynasty, made Indore the centre of his territory in Malwa. The Holkars built Rajwada and Lal Bagh Palace, and Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled the Holkar state from 1767 to 1795, is still remembered for her fair administration and for the temples and ghats she built across India.

The arrival of the railway in the late 19th century and the opening of cotton textile mills in the early 20th century turned Indore into a major trading and manufacturing centre, earning it the nickname “Mini Mumbai”. After independence the Holkar state joined India, and Indore became part of Madhya Pradesh in 1956.

In recent decades the city has added IT parks, pharmaceutical and auto-component industries around Pithampur, and a fast-growing education and healthcare sector. Today Indore is the largest city and the commercial hub of Madhya Pradesh.

Education & Higher Education

Indore is one of central India’s leading education hubs, and its schools and colleges draw students from across Madhya Pradesh and the neighbouring states.

For schools, families often look at Daly College, Delhi Public School, Choithram School, St. Paul’s and Emerald Heights, among many others spread across the city. Most residential areas have good schools within a short drive.

For higher education, the city is home to IIT Indore and IIM Indore, both on the outskirts, along with Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), SGSITS, IPS Academy, Medi-Caps University and several medical, law and management colleges.

Students moving to Indore usually look for PG rooms and flats around Bhawarkuan, Vijay Nagar, Sapna Sangeeta and Palasia, close to colleges and coaching centres. Visiting the area before you book helps you judge the commute and the neighbourhood.

Healthcare

Indore is the main healthcare destination for central India, and patients travel here from across Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring states.

The city has several well-known multi-speciality and super-speciality hospitals:

  • Choithram Hospital & Research Centre: a long-established multi-speciality hospital
  • Bombay Hospital: a large multi-speciality hospital with advanced diagnostics
  • CHL Hospital: a trusted name in multi-speciality care
  • Apollo Rajshree Hospital: a multi-speciality hospital of the Apollo group
  • Medanta Super Speciality Hospital: known for cardiac and complex care
  • MY Hospital: the large government hospital attached to MGM Medical College

Before you finalise a flat, check how far it is from the nearest hospital and the doctors your family already trusts.

Infrastructure, Commute & Transport

Indore is well connected by air, rail and road, and its roads are generally wide and well maintained.

Air travel: Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport has direct flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad and other major cities.

Rail: Indore Junction is the main station, with regular trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Ahmedabad and beyond.

Roads: The Agra–Bombay (AB) Road is the city’s main north–south spine, and national highways connect Indore to Ujjain, Bhopal, Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The Bypass Road and the Super Corridor help traffic reach the newer areas.

City transport: City buses (iBus), auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws and app cabs are widely available, and the Indore Metro is being introduced in phases along key corridors.

Everyday commute: Traffic is heaviest on AB Road and around Vijay Nagar at peak hours, so choosing a home close to your workplace saves a lot of time. The old city areas around Rajwada, Sarafa and Malharganj have narrow lanes, where movers may need smaller vehicles for the last stretch. It is worth planning for this when you book.

Lifestyle

Life in Indore is relaxed, affordable and built around food, family and festivals.

Food: Indore is famous for its street food. Start the day with poha and jalebi, and look out for bhutte ka kees, garadu, sabudana khichdi, Indori namkeen and sev, and a glass of shikanji. Sarafa Bazaar and 56 Dukan are the best-known food spots.

Shopping: Treasure Island, C21 Mall and Phoenix Citadel cover fashion, entertainment and dining, while Rajwada and the old city markets are the place for traditional shopping.

Green spaces: Pipliyapala Regional Park, Lal Bagh and the many neighbourhood parks are popular for morning walks and weekend outings.

Housing: Vijay Nagar, Palasia, Saket and the Scheme 54, 74 and 78 areas are popular with professionals and families, while the Super Corridor and Bypass Road areas have newer apartments and gated communities. Those working in Pithampur often look at the Rau and Bypass Road side.

Climate: Summers are hot, the monsoon runs from July to September, and winters are pleasant. Try to avoid moving on days of heavy rain, and ask your packers for extra waterproof packing in the monsoon.

Community, People and Customs

Indore is known for its warm, easy-going people. Hindi is spoken everywhere, along with the local Malwi dialect, and the city is home to long-established Marathi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marwari and Jain communities, as well as newcomers from across India who come for work and study.

Festivals are celebrated on a big scale. Rang Panchami, five days after Holi, is Indore’s own celebration, with the famous Gair procession through the streets. Ganesh Chaturthi and the Anant Chaturdashi processions, Navratri and Garba, and Diwali light up the city every year.

In apartment societies and neighbourhoods, residents’ associations organise festivals, sports and community events, so it is easy to meet your neighbours and settle in quickly.
