THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE
8 to 10 weeks before you move
- Make a room wise inventory of all the goods in your house. Identify items you want to move, store, sell, donate or discard
- Declutter your home. Donate and discard items you don’t need.
- Prepare a budget for your move
- Reduce purchase of long lasting food and supply items
- Identify the new home you are moving to and see what things you need in your new home
- Arrange Travel Documents, Tickets, Hotel etc.
- Organizing all your documents such as property, health, education, finance, banking, passports, visa etc.
- Prepare a folder in the cloud and digitize all your documents for easy access
- If renting notify landlord / If own, plan to rent or sell
- Inform your child's school of transfer
- Research about good moving companies
4 to 6 weeks before you move
- Collect estimates from movers, finalize a mover and freeze moving dates
- Create a "move file" to keep track of estimates, receipts and other important information.
- Put up items for sale
- Make a list of important person / organisations to be notified about your move and change of address
- Collect all the items you may have loaned out
- Collect Refunds & Deposits
- Decide if you will keep your plants or give them away.
- Back up your data on your computer, phone etc.
- Start consuming food and supplies
1 to 2 Weeks before you move
- Obtain cartons from movers and start segregating clothes and other items to be moved, stored, sold, donated or discarded
- Keep away jewellery, high value and important items in the locker if required
- Inform utility companies about cancellation
- Photograph your home and items for memory
3 Days before you move
- Defrost your fridge and remove ice at least 24hours before your move date
- Dry out washing machine, dish washer
- Disassemble electronic items as computer, printer, TV. Label the wires
- Make a note of any pre-existing damages to your goods or property
- Keep essential items such as medicines, toiletries, and others
- Prepare an insurance value list for the items to be moved including high value items.
The day before you move
- Keep all your important documents, keys & goods in a safe place to avoid them being packed with your shipment
- Pack your personal clothes, shoes, toiletries and prepare for travel
- Arrange a place to keep your children, elderly parents and pets
- If you're moving out of a building with elevators, arrange with management for use of elevators.
- If you're moving out of a building with security, arrange with management for gate pass.
- Clean and air your stove.
- Give instructions to Drivers, Maids etc. if any.
The day before you move
- Make sure everything is ready for the move.
- Show all your goods to the supervisor and inform what needs to be packed first and what needs to be packed last.
- After packing, check all rooms, cupboards, garage etc to make sure that all items have been packed.
- Inform packers if you have purchased or received any new items or decided to take any additional items not mentioned during the pre move-survey
- After packing Check, sign and retain a copy of the inventory
- Walk through the house and ensure nothing is left behind
- Check meter readings of electrical / water connections.
- Pay any dues to electrical, water, gas, internet providers.
- Lock & hand over house keys to those concerned
- Leave your forwarding address and phone number for your home's new occupants.
THINGS TO DO BEFORE GOODS ARRIVE
On arrival at new destination & prior to goods delivery
- Contact your movers local office to notify your arrival and confirm your date for delivery, address for delivery and contact numbers
- Complete the Cleaning of new premises before moving crew come for delivery
- Give some thought to the actual placement of furniture or heavy items
- Label rooms for easy placement of individual boxes and furniture (Eg. Master bedroom, baby's, living room etc)
The day goods arrive:
- Keep copy of Inventory and direct them to the respective rooms and ensure all items are received
- Once all the goods are received & counted, let the movers unpack your cartons and remove the debris at the end of the day. Generally, it is best to unpack in 1 or 2 rooms at a time
- Let the movers know if you want to unpack certain boxes on your own
- Look for any visible signs of damage and note them on the delivery report. File a claim with photographs of the damages as soon as possible and notify your mover.
